In general, open work permit allows an individual to work for any employer in any profession except for the regulated professions that require a license. The following are some of the categories of people eligible for an open work permit. NOTE: The list is not exhaustive.

• International students upon graduation (PGWP) from an eligible program at a DLI
• Spouse/common-law partners of International Students or Work permit holders in Canada
• Refugee Claimants or their family members 

This type of work permit is tied to a specific job/employer and are for a predetermined duration. In most cases the employer is required to obtain a positive or neutral Labour Market Impact Assessment(LMIA).
